Purpose and Overall Goal:

This program introduces healthcare professionals

to a large variety of compression bandages, garments and other compression devices. It reviews the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral venous system, discusses forms of peripheral artery disease, the theory of how compression devices work, and introduces various compression devices and the indications and contraindications for their use.

Course Objectives:

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

• Describe the peripheral venous system and normal dynamics of blood return

• Describe the varieties and progression of chronic venous disease

• Identify the types of compression devices and their uses

• Identify the main indications, contraindications and precautions of compression therapy

Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians:

Upon the completion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

• Describe the transfer of oxygenated blood and nutrients in the capillaries

• Identify risk factors associated with chronic venous disease

• Identify the types of compression devices and their uses

• Identify the main indications, contraindications and precautions of compression therapy
